Student Hostel and PG Safety Checklist
Safety is the first filter for a student's stay. This checklist covers what to see, ask and confirm in writing before a student moves in.
Building and room
- Working fire exits, extinguishers and clear stairways.
- Reliable power, ventilation and a window that opens.
- Safe wiring and no overloaded extension boards.
- Fans, balconies and railings that are safe in a student's room.
People and rules
- A named warden or owner who is reachable day and night.
- Entry and exit logs, visitor rules and CCTV in common areas.
- A clear process for medical emergencies and the nearest hospital.
- A way for parents to contact the operator directly.
Paperwork
- A written agreement stating rent, deposit, notice period and what is included.
- Receipts for every payment, in the name of the operator.
- Check whether local rules require the hostel or PG to be registered, and ask to see proof.
Wellbeing
Students under exam pressure need people to talk to. Look for a hostel where staff notice changes in behaviour, and keep regular contact from home. Use helplines if a student seems overwhelmed.
